Bank holiday walkies tend to be a bigger adventure than your usual weekend wander. Maybe you’re heading out into the hills, aiming for a National Trust wander, or planning a beach day. Your dog loves getting out and exploring, but are they slowing down, and you’re worried about their joints?

How can you get out and have fun, while still taking it easy on your dog’s joints?

Plan in sniff stops

Walks dont have to be go-go-go. Take a slow meander during some of your walk, and let your dog’s nose go wild. Sniffing is just as stimulating as walking for your dog, if not more so. They’ll love having sniff breaks during your walk. It takes the pressure off their joints as they can go at their own, slower pace, but it’s still a good workout for their brain.

Pick good terrain

OK, this is tricky if your plan is to head for the mountains. But, if you haven’t decided on a destination for your adventure yet, then think about the terrain you want to pick.

A nice woodland walk is probably the easiest on their joints. It’s often softer ground with lots of leaf litter or mulched surfaces.
The beach is also good for a wander, although lots of running on sand is harder work for your dog over a long day.

Hard, rocky ground or lots of pavement work is the hardest on your dog’s joints as it’s high impact, especially if they’re having to trot to keep up.

Include natural movement and avoid ball throwing

Ball flingers tend to result in high acceleration and deceleration forces, as well as rapid turns. It puts a lot of force through your dog's joints and can make them feel stiff the next day.

Build more natural play into your adventure. Perhaps play hide and seek with treats, go on a sniffari, wander new and unknown paths, or play in shallow streams or lakes. More natural movement is lower impact and better for your dog’s joints

Pace your day

Bank holiday adventures don't have to be an epic mission. Take the day slowly. Stop frequently for a drink and to admire the view. Enjoy your time together, with plenty of fuss breaks.

The most important step is the aftercare

You’ve had a fabulous day, and everyone is tired but happy. Now it’s time to ensure your dog isn’t feeling the after effects the next day.

  • Let them rest - Plenty of time on a comfy bed is the order of the day.

  • Watch for signs of stiffness - Are they slow getting up, avoiding moving around, or a bit grumpy?

  • Give them a massage - Gently rubbing along their muscles will help get the blood flowing to their muscles and joints. Most dogs love a gentle massage, and it’s fantastic for their mobility.

  • Keep them hydrated - Make sure they have access to plenty of water, during and after your adventure

  • Give them their AntinolⓇ - Support their joint health and mobility with their AntinolⓇ Joint Care Pro, to keep them feeling at their best.

Have a fantastic Bank Holiday weekend, from everyone at Vetz PetzⓇ!
